If it wasn’t for iOS devices and mediation apps, I’d have to stock up on a collection of meditation CDs to help me get a good night’s sleep. Meditation is not only great for sleeping, but it also helps to reduce stress and ease the mind. There are plenty of mediation apps, but not many that provide users with unique features to customize their sessions.
Simply Being is a guided meditation app for relaxation and presence. It features voice-guided sessions with music and length options.
Before getting started, the app recommends putting the iOS device on Airplane mode so users aren’t interrupted. There’s only one screen to get familiar with in order to use the app. Simply tap the top bar to select voice with music or voice with nature sounds. Users can then tap the bottom bar to select between four different meditation lengths: 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes.
There are currently three different nature sounds to enjoy: ocean, rain and stream. I preferred to use the background music as I found it to be more soothing. Users can choose to increase or decrease the voice or music and nature volume before pressing play or during the session if one seems to loud. The best feature is that it works in the background so users can play a slide show of their favorite images or browse another app while they listen.
Simply Being comes with instructions and tips to help make the experience better. I found it to be fairly relaxing and enjoyed the different customization options. While it works great at first, there are still a few improvements that could make the app even better. For instance, the woman’s voice is soothing but she doesn’t offer enough positive affirmations or variations so the meditation sessions can get repetitive. Additionally the app could use more music and nature sound options for those who don’t want to listen to the guided voice.
Overall, Simply Being is off to a great start. It’s functional, calming and really helps to clear the mind. It’s less than one dollar price tag also makes the app cheap and affordable for many. I wouldn’t recommend it as the only go-to meditation app on the home screen, but it is one that I’d add to a collection to help vary meditation routines.
